History of the Department
The department started functioning during the year 1977, with Prof.P.K Krishan Nampoothiry as the HOD and Shri:P.Padmanabh, Shri:C.Chandran Pillai and Shri: K.P Satya Prakash as the memebers of the faculty.

The department offers Botany main Degree course (Model-1) under choice based credit and semester system, the open course being Ecotourism and Choice based course Plant Genetic Resource Management. We admit 32 students every year among which 90-95% passes out. In 1993 we secured the 1st rank of M.G University.
Facilities
The department provides a library with 650 books including floras, books on biotechnology, bio informatics, ethno botany and pharmacognosy.

The students get trained in handling instruments such as Autoclave, Hot Air Oven, Digital pH meter, Centrifuge, Inoculation hood, colorimeter etc.

We also keep a herbarium of local flora, along with their descriptions and diagrams. A Botanical Garden and Herbal Garden are also maintained by the Dept.
Activities

During the year 2006-2007 the main program was “Know our Environment”. As the first phase an exhibition of medical plants was organized for the public and students. 108 medicinal plants were exhibited including rare and endangered species such as Sarcostema, Rauvolfa serpentine, Alstonia veninata etc.

As the second phase, a discussion of ecologically toxic materials was conducted, to make the students aware of the hazards of various chemicals, drugs, cosmetics etc. Dr.P.V Radhakrishnan, Dept of Chemistry, Devamatha College Kuravilangad was moderator.
Alumni
The dept. has meritorious alumni, holding important positions in state government and in the field of research.
Achievements

During the year 2006-2007 UGS has sanctioned a minor research project on the Flora of Perumpalam”.
