About the department
Department of Botany, one of the leading departments of this college was established in 1977 under the headship of Prof K. P Krishnan Nampoothiri. The department offers an undergraduate programme in Botany with Zoology and Chemistry as complementary subjects. Ever since its inception the department has made tremendous stride imparting qualitative teaching enabling students to stand out in academics and extracurricular activities. Our students have excelled by securing ranks in B. Sc degree examinations. Sincere efforts of the dedicated and competent faculty have helped us to achieve this feat. Above 50% of our students opt for higher studies and many are placed at high positions in research field as well as academia throughout India. The faculty has successfully undertaken minor research projects funded by UGC on various aspects like taxonomy, phytochemistry, environmental science etc.
The students conduct plant surveys on a regular basis and a compilation of the same was released as campus flora. The department maintains a herbal garden which is a treasure of plant wealth and a conservatory of rare and endangered species, trees and shrubs catering to the needs of young botanists. A Butterfly garden with specific host plants for a wide range of rare butterflies and a green house was established and maintained by the students. A full-fledged vermicompost unit is functioning in the department which provides organic manure for the vegetable garden established in the campus.
